SUSTAINABILITY SEMINAR BEING OFFERED AT K-STATE

MANHATTAN -- A seminar on sustainability, "Greenhouse Gases, Carbon Taxes and Trading, and Carbon Sequestration," will be offered Jan. 6-8, 2010, at Kansas State University.

The seminar, in 1052 Rathbone Hall, will focus on climate change exercises, carbon footprinting and greenhouse gas reduction. Participants will hear from experts about tracking and measuring greenhouse gases, various companies' experiences in addressing greenhouse gases and sequestration opportunities for Kansas.

Leadership for the course, CHE 670, which may be taken for academic credit or for continuing education, is provided by K-State's Center for Hazardous Substance Research and department of chemical engineering.

"Greenhouse gases, carbon taxes and trading, and carbon sequestration have all been in the news recently as leaders discuss the growing importance of reducing greenhouse emissions," said Larry Erickson, director of the Center for Hazardous Substance Research. "This is an increasingly important topic because of global climate change and the need for companies to begin reporting their greenhouse gas emissions."

An open public session, "Public Policy Dimensions and Reducing GHG Emissions at K-State and in Communities," will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, in 1052 Rathbone Hall.

More information about the seminar, including online registration, is available at:

Time: 8:00 am-1:00pm
Where: K-State Campus--Bosco Plaza in front of the Union

Visit http://faastfunrun.wordpress.com/ to learn more about the event
and to register!

K-State's Episcopal Student group is hosting a 5K Fun Run/Walk to help
raise awareness for global issues such as the fair trade movement,
environmental sustainability and social action. The course will travel
through K-State's lovely campus, and even if you're not a runner,
bring a friend and catch up on life while you walk! After the 5K,
there will be a social justice fair held in Bosco Plaza in front of
the Union. This is an opportunity to learn more about some of the
student groups on campus and the causes they support and promote.

Registration will start at 8:30 am that morning, and the race will
begin at 9:00 am. The registration fee is $10 for individuals and $25
for a team of 3. Team registration is highly encouraged! You can even
select an African country your team would like to represent. We will
also be selling tote bags for $12 that were made by women in Kenya and
Malawi who sustain their livelihood by making products such as these.
Prizes will also be awarded after the race.

We will also have on campus registration during the following dates and times:
Justin Hall lounge: Tuesday, April 14th - Thursday, April 16th 11 am - 1 pm
Student Union: Tuesday, April 21st - Thursday, April 23rd 11 am - 2 pm

Don't forget to tell your friends, family, anyone and everyone you
know! And out of towners, don't be scared! If you want to come in town
for the race, just let us know, and we'll find you a place to stay :)

Our mission for this event is to create awareness in our community
because only then can we take action together. Proceeds from the event
will go towards supporting Comfort the Children International (a
non-profit organization based in Kenya), Africa Bags and Equal
Exchange (a company committed to fair trade products).

The FAAST Fun Run 5K is a race dedicated to promoting awareness and
action. Together we can make a difference. Simple acts, such as
purchasing fair trade food and gift items can make dramatic changes in
the lives of people across the globe. The focus of this race is issues
in Africa. Run for reason, and join the fight against poverty and
inequality.

**You can also visit http://k2kcollegeteam.wordpress.com/ to learn
more about the journey we will be making this summer to Maai Mahiu, a

11-2
Long's Park in Manhattan @ 17th and Yuma

The K-State Campaign for Nonviolence is sponsoring a "Local Foods Fair in the Park" as part of the 2009 Season for Nonviolence. This season, we've been thinking about how the food economy (local and otherwise) and nonviolence are related.

To celebrate the conclusion our Season we have planned to meet in Long's Park for the Local Food Fair. We've contacted growers and producers and other community services like the Breadbasket and Prairie Land Food. The K-State Student Farm club will be there also. As well as many others!

If you provide any other service related to our event, please feel free to contact me if I haven't already contacted you! I have come to find out, there are many services and folks involved; I've had an exciting time trying to reach everyone.

So, pass the word along. Come and go. Bring you kids and your pets. Bring your wagon. Bring your bike. Play in the park! Also, don't forget to go to People's for lunch afterwards :)

FOCUS ON FOOD AND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS

From K-State Media Relations:

Friday, Jan. 23, 2009

K-STATE'S 2009 SEASON FOR NONVIOLENCE TO FOCUS ON FOOD AND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS

MANHATTAN -- Food, food systems and human relationships will be the focus of Kansas State University's eighth annual Season for Nonviolence, Jan. 30-April 4.

The community-wide event is dedicated to promoting nonviolent relationships and takes place on the 64 days between the assassination anniversaries of two world-famous peacemakers: Mahatma Gandhi, who was killed Jan. 30, 1948, and Martin Luther King Jr., who was shot April 4, 1968. The observance was started in 1998 and has grown into an international event.

"An underlying aim of nonviolence is to encourage people to change our individual and collective minds about how we deal with the inevitable conflict in our lives," said Susan Allen, director of K-State's nonviolence education programs. "One way to do this is to take into account a more complex and realistic range of response options beyond polarities like 'fight or flight.' This includes expanding the alternatives beyond commercial agriculture or sustainable agriculture, either meat eating or no meat eating, local foods or imports, and so on.

Allen said we all have a relationship with the Earth and with our food. "The more nonviolent that interaction becomes the more sustainable the relationships will be. Healthy relationships are like good nutrition; the key is balance," she said.

K-State Season for Nonviolence events, all free and open to the public, include:

* Monday, Feb. 9: Rhonda Janke, professor of sustainable agriculture at K-State, will present "Connecting the Dots at K-State: Sustainability, Food Systems and Nonviolence," at 7 p.m. in the K-State Student Union's Little Theatre. Janke will discuss sustainable agriculture and how the local food system supports nonviolence every day.

* Tuesday, Feb. 10: Carol Barta will lead the discussion "Favorite Food Books: Talk and Tasting" from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Manhattan Public Library's auditorium. Barta, who works at the library and is on the board of directors of the People's Grocery Cooperative in Manhattan, will lead a discussion about food systems authors such as Barbara Kingsolver and Michael Pollan. A local dessert will be served.

* Tuesday, Feb. 17: A showing of the film "King Corn" at 6:30 p.m. in the Manhattan Public Library auditorium. The showing is sponsored by the Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice.

* Wednesday, Feb. 18: A showing of the film "The Future of Food" at 7 p.m. in the Manhattan Public Library auditorium. The showing is sponsored by the People's Grocery Cooperative.

* Monday, Feb. 23: "Change How You See, Not How You Look" by Woody Winfree, founder of the I Am Beautiful Project, at 7 p.m. in Union's Forum Hall. Related to the event and as part of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, the film "The I Am Beautiful Project" will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the Union's Little Theatre. The event is organized and sponsored by K-State's Sensible Nutrition And body image Choices, or SNAC, peer education group.

* Monday, March 9: "Vegetarian or Carnivore -- Wait! There's More!" will be a panel discussion guided by K-State student Cathy Benco, senior in dietetics, Manhattan. The panel will consist of a variety of eaters including carnivores, vegetarians, vegans and lacto-vegetarians.

* Thursday, March 26: The film "Black Gold: A film about Coffee and Trade" will be shown at 7 p.m. in Hale Library's Hemisphere Room. The film follows Tadesse Meskela, general manager of the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union in Ethiopia as he seeks a fair trade market for more than 74,000 Ethiopian coffee farmers. Summer Lewis, K-State alum and former Equal Exchange employee, will introduce the film. Fair trade tea and chocolate will be served.

* Saturday, April 4: the Local Food Fair will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Long's Park and feature local farmers and producers, community groups and grocery stores that support the local food economy.

During K-State's Season for Nonviolence, event organizers plan to raise $500 to buy and give a life-sustaining calf to a family in Africa through Heifer Project International.

This year People's Grocery is delighted to be a sponsor for WALK KS 09, March 8 through May 2. To inaugurate a new emphasis on grains, Sunday March 15 from 4:00-5:00 PM in the Manhattan Public Library Auditorium, Maureen Olewnik of Manhattan's American Institute of Baking (AIB) will present "Whole Grains & Health." Find out more about Walk Kansas

How does Walk Kansas work?

  • Co-workers, family members, friends and neighbors form teams of 6 people who will track minutes of physical activity and food choices during the 8-week challenge.

  • The physical activity goal for each team member is 2 ½ hours (150 minutes) a week, which is equal to 10 Walk Kansas miles. Strive for 30 minutes of activity a day, at least 5 days per week. More is even better!

  • Walking isn’t the only activity that counts. In the Participant Pages section of this website, you will find a list of approved activities. In 2008, the Federal Government issued its first-ever Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. They recommend 2 ½ hours of physical activity, including muscle strengthening activities 2 days a week, which also count toward Walk Kansas activities. Read more about these new activity guidelines.

  • Participants record daily fruit and vegetable consumption and how often they eat whole grain foods.

  • Team members report progress to their team captain weekly.

  • Friendly competition can be motivating, so check your team progress with others across the state.

Protecting Us From Dangerous Pathogens

This ran on 91.3 FM this morning, part of their Health series. I thought it was interesting because it focused on security measures for level 3 pathogens currently in place at K-State's BRI and then talked about how security for level 4 at NBAF will differ.

From: http://kansaspublicradio.org/newsstory.php?itemID=13021
Date: January 26, 2009

"When the Department of Homeland Security chose Kansas State University as the site for the nation’s premier animal and plant disease research laboratory, political and business leaders cheered. But at least a few people harbor fears of what could happen if something goes wrong. As part of our series, “Kansas Health: A Prescription for Change”, Health Reporter Bryan Thompson explores the technologies and procedures designed to protect the public."

Eating Right Can Save The Planet

Mark Bittman: Eating Right Can Save the Planet

NPR.org, Morning Edition, January 22, 2009 · If you're one of those people hoping to change the world in 2009, writer Mark Bittman says you can start by changing what you eat.

In his new book, Food Matters, The New York Times food columnist writes about the environmental impact of industrial farming — and how individuals can make a difference by cutting down on the amount of animal products they consume.

New Local Food Alliance to Meet January 31

A number of K-State professors are teaming up with People's Grocery to promote some kind of local food alliance, and the first meeting will be a potluck lunch on January 31 at the Douglass Center.

This will be a prelude at 11:30 to the People's Grocery annual meeting, scheduled for 2pm at the Douglass Center.

The local food lunch will involve the K-State professors and other interested consumers, and we're working to involve local producers as well. The idea is to have a meeting of consumer and producer interests to figure out what the alliance will entail, and People's Grocery staff will be there to help plan with the producers for People's Grocery's local food needs.

I hope people read this and get excited about attending and participating in building a local food alliance that helps all kinds of people to grow closer to the sources of their food.
